March Meeting

March will be a Penjing/landscape workshop. Cost and details will be announced soon, but will be about $20 for members and the workshop will require advanced registration and payment.

February Meeting and Workshop

Peter Jones will conduct a grafting demo and workshop with pines. Everyone is welcome to attend and observe and members who have pre-paid will get to complete their own graft. Peter will also bring a selection of starter pines to sell. Please be aware that the workshop will likely extend until 9:30.

January Meeting

Guest speaker, Ed Meyer of Bella Bonsai in Southport, NC, will lecture and demonstrate tanuki or phoenix graft bonsai techniques. Ed started training bonsai as a young marine in Okinawa. His focus extends from traditional species to native trees. Ed will also bring trees and pots to sell.

Maymont Flower and Garden Show

RBS will be exhibiting again February 9-12, 2012, in the Richmond Convention Center. This year’s theme is “The Streets of Richmond”. We will also be signing up participants in our March Beginner's Workshop.

Volunteers may pay for parking downtown or catch the free shuttle at the Diamond. Volunteer badges can be picked up at the table out side of the main entrance (in the lobby). Display trees should be dropped off Wendesday Evening 6-9pm or Thursday morning, 8-10 am and be picked up at exactly 5pm on Sunday evening.

RBS Holiday Dinner

Peking Restaurant, Midlothian. $21 per member (tip included, alcohol extra). Bring a $15 - $20 bonsai or garden gift for the exchange. Please RSVP richmondbonsaisociety@yahoo.com

October Meeting

Potomac Bonsai Association President, Chuck Croft will discuss the organization and its activities. In addition, he will lead a PowerPoint lecture/discussion reviewing the PBA Regional Juried Show which will help all bonsai enthusiasts to improve the state of their art and their collections. 7 p.m. in the activity room of St. Mary's Woods, 1257 Marywood Ln, Richmond, VA, 23229

Fall Bonsai Show at Strange's Garden Center

The show is officially from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We need 3-4 MEMBERS to work at the information and demonstration table though out the day, so if you have 2-3 hours to spare, please let us know.

We need 25 MEMBER trees to show, and we want as many members as possible to participate. Trees should be dropped off at Stranges between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m., and picked up between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. If you want to display trees, but cannot transport them that day, please email us at and we will make arrangements to get your trees a day or two before and will deliver them the following Monday at the September meeting.

Since we need to create labels, please email us your tree variety, style, overall age, and years in training ASAP, but no later than 5pm Thursday. Trees must be pest and disease free and must be top dressed. If you have a stand that goes with your pot, feel free to bring it.
