2012 Potomac Bonsai Festival May 4-6

The annual Festival is three days of demonstrations, workshops, exhibits, vendors, and the renowned collections of the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum. Get hands-on experience in workshops and expand your knowledge at informative and entertaining demonstrations. Visiting bonsai artists Harry Hirao and Suthin Sukosolvisit will share their expertise at workshops and demonstrations. All events will be held rain or shine. Exhibiting Trees. As PBA members, all RBS members are invited to exhibit trees in the show. In particular, as a new club to PBA, it would be really nice for RBS to be represented in the show. This is a NON-juried show, but the very best of the trees submitted will be displayed in the Special Exhibits Wing, and those owners will get a special certificate. Trees need to up at Arboretum by Thursday, May 3rd at 2pm and picked up Sunday evening. Trees must be bug-free and in show condition.

Hirao Design Demo, Sat. 9–12. Hirao will demonstrate techniques to improve a mature tree.

Sukosolvisit Design Demo, Sat.1–4, Sukosolvisit performs steps to transform a mature juniper into a bonsai.

Potomac Bonsai Association Members,Sat. 9–12, Sun.1- 3. Informal, drop-in demonstrations.

RBS at VMFA Art of Japan Day

A FAMILY EVENT. Come explore Japanese art and traditions! Make your own carp kite and Gyotaku fish prints, become enchanted with the art of Bonsai, discover the history of Japanese Manga and Anime, watch martial arts masters demonstrate Aikido, and feel the rhythm of Taiko drums! Geared towards ages 3-12.

Due to the holiday and other events, we will NOT have our regular May meeting. Please Join us June 3 for our annual picnic and auction.

Regular June Meeting

We will be doing a Penjing (landscape) workshop. Everyone is free to watch, but there will be a material fee to create your own. The fee will be announced soon and will cover most materials including pot, stones, soil, and foundation and accent plants. Additional or extra plants may be available for purchase during workshop. Workshop participants should bring special stones or accent plants, cover moss, wire, and tools.

RBS Crawl at Gardener Nursery

Come join RBS members as we look for appropriate bonsai material. The Gardener Nursery, 12685 W. Broad Street, (just west of 288 intersection). Come search for good material with other members. The word is that they have great stuff. Cash or check, no credit.

World Bonsai Day Open House

May 12, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm National Bonsai & Penjing Museum

The National Bonsai & Penjing Museum celebrates the second annual World Bonsai Day with continuous demonstrations by Potomac Bonsai Association members, drawings for the demonstration trees, curator-led tours hourly from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, and an exhibit about Mr. Saburo Kato. World Bonsai Day was created by the World Bonsai Friendship Federation (WBFF) to honor the memory of Mr. Kato, the founder of WBFF, who believed that bonsai has the power to unite people by acting as a bridge to international friendship and peace. Admission and all events are free.

Azalea Bonsai Exhibit: Putting on the Glitz

In Japan, it is said that the beauty of an azalea bonsai in bloom is like the beauty of a courtesan dressed in her finest brocade kimono. Breathtaking blossoms cover these late-blooming Satsuki azaleas, miniature in form, but covered with full-sized flowers. This annual spring exhibit showcases the most spectacular examples. National Bonsai & Penjing Museum. Free.

Create your own bonsai in this all-day class designed for the beginner. Learn the horticultural, aesthetic, and cultural elements of bonsai and then apply your new knowledge during the hands-on workshop. All necessary materials, including the plant, pot, soil, and wire are provided, and some tools will be available. Please bring tools if you have them. Bring lunch for a noon break. National Bonsai & Penjing Museum. Fee: $129 ($103 FONA/NBF) Registration required.

Bonsai Repotting Demonstration

Watch as a museum curator repots a tree from the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum’s permanent collection. This procedure, which is usually done behind-the-scenes, will be performed for visitors as an informal drop-in demonstration. Free.

Is it time to repot your bonsai? Learn how to do this important procedure correctly with expert guidance. A bonsai museum curator will teach repotting concepts and skills, giving individual attention to each tree the student brings in. Limit of one large or two small bonsai per student. RBS will be providing demo's and information about bonsai at Srange's Garden Center's Blooming Days, Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1. Come visit us and ask questions. We can help you pick out a bonsai or you can even bring you bonsai if you need help or advice.
