RBS at Virginia Sate Fair

RBS exhibit and demonstration at this year’s Virginia State Fair.

We need about 30 trees to display at the Sate Fair. Dan will be coordinating and collecting all of the trees in the days prior to the the Fair. To contribute to the display, contact Dan Kalman at 359-2041 as soon as possible.

Art Blooms: Satsuki Azalea Bonsai Exhibit.

May 29 – June 13, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm: U.S. National Arboretum, National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, Special Exhibits Wing.Breathtaking blossoms cover these late-blooming azaleas, miniature in form, but covered with full-sized flowers. This annual spring exhibit showcases the most spectacular examples. Free.

Potomac Bonsai Festival

April 30, May 1 and 2, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Administration building and grounds

This annual festival features something for everyone, from the casual observer to the accomplished bonsai artist, including demonstrations, exhibits, vendors, lectures, and workshops. Potomac Bonsai Association members and prominent visiting bonsai artists will share their expertise at several programs. Co-sponsored by the Potomac Bonsai Association, the National Bonsai Foundation, and the National Arboretum. Program schedule details and will be available in early March. Free festival admission. Some programs have fees.

Regular August Meeting: Satsuki Azalea

Our August 23rd meeting will be a presentation and a demonstration by Bob Mahler, a Japanese trained bonsai master, on satsuki azaleas. Bob previously gave a great demonstration on white pines at our club in 2008. See his website at http://www.kifubonsai.com/

The program will be held at 7 PM in the community activity room at St. Mary's Woods at 1257 Marywood Lane Richmond, VA 23229.

Be sure to come early if you need advice or want help with your plants and don't forget to brign items for our raffle.

Regular June Meeting

Our June meeting this month will be held at 7 PM in the community activity room at St. Mary's Woods at 1257 Marywood Lane Richmond, VA 23229.

Our June program will be both a presentation and workshop on kusamono by Ms. Young Cho, a volunteer at the US Arboretum and an artist herself. Kusamono are small potted collections of wild grasses and flowers designed to be viewed/displayed with bonsai or alone.

Watching the presentation is free, of course, but to participate in the workshop the cost is $20 per person, She will supply all materials except for your own, small, shallow container. This container can be a shallow bonsai pot or saucer, with maybe a 4-6 inch planting area.

RBS Annual Picnic and Auction

Joseph Bryan Park shelter #1, The shelter will be marked, and signs will be posted on the road in the Park.

RBS will supply hot dogs, hamburgers, ice, drinks and all plates and utensils. Members should bring a salad, side dish, or a dessert to share with members. Trees/auction items should arrive from 2-3 PM, we’ll eat between 3-4, and the auction will begin at 4 PM.

We will have our annual auction of plants and bonsai accoutrements – super bargains and a way to expand your plant collection. You must be a member to sell or bid on items at this event. A minimum 20% from each sale is donated automatically to the club to further club projects and to obtain good speakers.

RBS trip to PBS Fesitval

RBS MEMBERS who want to carpool on Saturday, May1 will meet and leave from the Walmart parking lot on Parham and Brooke Rd (Rte. 1). The carpool will likely return late afternoon. If you plan to participate in the carpool, please email Thomas at sonessensei@hotmail.com.

Co-sponsored by the Potomac Bonsai Association, the National Bonsai Foundation, and the National Arboretum. All events will be held rain or shine. Admission to the festival is free. Features ongoing exhibits, vendors, a juried show, and the renowned collections of the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, a variety of workshops, and entertaining demonstrations. Direction from Virginia (I 95 - I 295) - Follow I 95 North and cross the Wilson Bridge. Stay in the right lane over the bridge. Bear onto I 95/I 295 North to Washington. Follow I 295 to the exit for Route 50 West (New York Avenue). Once on Route 50 get in your left lane. You will approach the intersection of Bladensburg Road where only the two left lanes turn onto Bladensburg Road. Make the left onto Bladensburg Road and go 4 blocks to R Street. Make a left on R Street and continue 2 blocks to the Arboretum gates.

Maymont Japanese Stroll and Picnic

As follow-up to our Meeting about Japanese Gardens, Thomas will lead a tour of the Japanese Garden at Maymont. Everyone is encourraged to join us and bring a picnic if they want.

We will leave from the Hamilton street exit at exactly 3:00 p.m. Those who need to take the tram or move slowly are encourraged to procede early to Japanese garden.

Weather permitting. If it is raining, we will reschedule. Check the web site in the morning for rain cancellation.
